Aside from the first mandatory class session, you will not be required to visit the Harper campus for English 102.

What technological requirements do I need to meet in order to access and use the English 102 website?
In order to participate in English 102, you will need access to the internet, a valid e-mail address, and a word processing program. You must also understand how to send and receive both e-mail and e-mail attachments. In addition, in order to access the English 102 website properly, you should have an updated version of an internet browser, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer. If needed, here are links to download the latest version of these programs:

Firefox
Internet Explorer
Safari

It is also highly recommended that you have copies of the following (free) programs installed on your computer for accessing and using sites related to the content of the course:

Adobe Acrobat Reader
Windows Media Player
Real Player
Quicktime
Flash Player
Shockwave Player

What applications and technical skills will I need for the course?
In order to participate in English 102, you will need access to the internet, a valid e-mail address, and a word processing program. In addition, you must understand how to send and receive both e-mail and e-mail attachments.

Is there a text for the course?
Yes, there is a text for the course. It is entitled The Norton Introduction to Literature, and it is available at the Harper Bookstore.

What is the e-mail address of my instructor?
Chris Padgett's e-mail address is as follows: cpadgett@harpercollege.edu

How long should I expect to wait before receiving a response to an e-mail sent to my instructor?
In general, I will respond to e-mail within 24 hours of receipt.

How do I save a file to be certain it can be read by my instructor?
The easiest way to be certain that I can read a file is to save it in Microsoft Word format (.doc). If you are using a word processing program other than Microsoft Word, you must save your files in rich text format (.rtf). To do this in most word processing programs, simply choose "File," click on "Save As," and choose ".rtf" as the file extension.

How do I submit my work?
Unless otherwise notified, all course-related projects (papers, quizzes, etc.) should be submitted via Blackboard.

How do I send an e-mail attachment?
To send an e-mail attachment, begin by creating a new message and entering the address of the recipient as well as the subject line of your e-mail (perhaps followed by a short message in the "text" section). Next, look for an icon in your e-mail program that looks like a paperclip; at this point, a "browse" window will open. From here, locate the file on your computer and select "Open." In some programs, this step may need to be followed by clicking on an "Add Attachment" icon. Finally, simply click "send."

What do I include in the subject line of my e-mails?
As a common courtesy, whether you're writing to your instructor or to one of your classmates, you should include the following information in the subject line of your e-mails:
  • The course number and section (102-059)
  • A brief summary of the message
In other words, the subject line of an e-mail might read something like, "102-059: Essay #1."

What do I include in the subject line of my message board postings?
The subject line of your message board postings should contain a short (3-5 word) summary of the content of your message.

Will the instructor have a strong presence on the message board?
Yes. At the same time, you do not need to wait for a posting from me before continuing a discussion. In other words, I will be contributing to the message board but your contribution should not depend on whether or not I respond to a specific posting.

Where do I find assignments and due dates?
Assignments and due dates are available in the course schedule and assignments section of the English 102 website.
