Week 3: 09/15-09/21
| 09/15 | 09/16-18 | 09/19 | 09/22 (Week Four)|
Overview of Assignments

During Week Three you'll submit your revision of Project 1, and we'll complete much of the work for Project 2, the Three Memoranda Project. As the name suggests, you will write three memoranda on three different topics and addressed to two different audiences. In preparation for writing the memoranda, we'll conduct an online discussion regarding aspects of the memos, and prepare an Audience Profile Sheet and rough draft for each of the three memoranda. The revised project will be due during Week Four, on 10 February to be exact.

During Week Three, there are five assignments due:

  1. Revision of Project 1 (6 pts.): Saturday, 09/15
  2. Writing/Online Exercise 4 (2 pts.): Sunday-Tuesday, 09/16-18

    • Revised Draft of Project 1 (6 pts.)

    1. Revised Draft of Self-Report and Business Writing Definition Project (6 pts.)
Use regular e-mail to submit your revised draft of Project 1. Again, be sure that your report is in the form of a memo to me (no one need be on copy) and that you have saved your file in Rich Text Format. Attach your revised project to an e-mail message to me. Again, be sure to fill in the "Subject" line of your e-mail message. • For 16-18 Sep
    Two Assignments:
    • Partners for Memo 1
    • Writing/Online Exercise 4: Discussion Conference for Project 2 (2 pts.)

    1. Partners for Memo 1

    2. The following people will be partners for the memo of introduction:

Please contact your partner between 16 and 18 September and begin exchanging information.

    3. Writing/Online Exercise 4: (2 pts.)
I will post the following discussion prompts to the class discussion forum regarding the content of two of the three memoranda. Write at least one substantial paragraph in response to each of the prompts:

      1. Memo 1: In writing an introduction of either a new class member or new member of a department at work, what should we consider pertinent details? What details are, or should be, inadmissable and left out of such an introduction? How does one give just the details and still achieve a welcoming, encouraging tone? Give specific examples to help guide your classmates.

      2. Memo 2: What are some examples of social or ethical problems that workers encounter in the workplace? What defines them as social or ethical problems? What would we need to know about an audience to address such an issues? Are there "hidden" issues within the problem to be addressed that might trip up a writer who has not analyzed the problem or audience carefully?

In order to receive credit for this exercise, be sure to post your response by 18 Sep.

  • For 19 Sep
    Two Assignments:
    • Audience Profile Sheet for Project 2 (2 pts.)
    • Rough Draft of Project 2 (1 pt.)

    1. Audience Profile Sheet for Project 2 (2 pts.)
Use the Audience Profile Sheet fill-in form to submit an APS for Project 2. Your APS needs to consider two different audiences: the audience for Memos 1 and 3, which is our class (and especially your partner for memo 1); and the audience for Memo 2, which will be the members of the account team in your fictional corporation. Again, the APS will be evaluated according to completeness.
    2. Rough Draft of Project 2 (1 pt.)
Read the description of Project 2 and write drafts of all three of the memoranda. Save them as separate files and in Rich Text Format (e.g. kn_memo1.rtf, kn_memo2.htm, kn_memo3.htm-- where "kn" would be _your_ initials). Use regular e-mail to submit your drafts to me. Submit the drafts as attachments to the e-mail message. Also, submit a copy of the draft of Memo 1 to your partner. Be sure to fill in the "Subject" line of your e-mail message. In the body of the e-mail, be sure to put your name and to notify me that your rough draft of Project 1 is attached to the message. Then, make sure that the attached file is in Rich Text Format. Last, be sure that I receive all three drafts and that your partner receives a copy of Memo 1 by 19 Sep.

As before, I will look at the drafts and send my comments to the class via e-mail. You should also send any comments that you might have, such as missing information, to your partner. In general, I will make comments that pertain to the drafts of the class as a whole. I will respond to individual drafts when it seems necessary. Of course, if in my general comments I do not address something in your draft that you would like addressed, let me know.
