Overview of Assignments--Week One

During Week One there are three assignments due:

  1. Orientation Quiz--Part Two (2 pts.)
  2. Writing/Online Exercise 1 (2 pts.)
  3. Writing/Online Exercise 2 (2 pts.)
For 05 Sep
  • Orientation Quiz--Part 2
Please complete Part Two of the Orientation Quiz (2 pts.). Be sure to e-mail this exercise to Kurt Neumann. Part Two must be submitted as an attachment to an e-mail message. Part Two should be a file in Rich Text Format. Receiving full points for Part Two of the quiz depends upon both completing the responses and submitting Part Two in the required formats and as a file attachment to an e-mail message. Part Two of the Orientation Quiz is due 09/05.

Shortly after I have received your completed quiz, I will send to you an e-mail message confirming receipt of it. That confirmation message will also contain a file attachment in Rich Text Format. That will help us make sure that you can receive as well as send file attachments. You will have an opportunity to resubmit the quiz on Thursday, 06 Sep, if the file attachment (Part Two) does not reach me in a readable format. If the problem has not been resolved by 06 Sep, then you will not receive credit for Part Two of the Orientation Quiz.

  • Writing/Online Exercise 1 (2 pts.)
Look at the advertising in any major business magazine (Fortune, Business Week, or the like). Then, in a couple of paragraphs, characterize the images of business people in those ads. What do they look like? Are they from any particular economic or social class? What messages do the images communicate? At the beginning of your discussion, please state the magazine you are reviewing. Post your response to the WebBoard discussion forum by 09/05.
  • Writing/Online Exercise 2 (2 pts.)
Review Exercises 8 and 9 (labeled "page 64" and "page 65) in your course packet. Then, in two or three paragraphs, respond to the issue of nongendered language in professional communication and in professional contexts. What about other things such as racial-neutral or age-neutral language? Also, think about whether technology itself uses gendered, racist, or class-oriented language (for instance, automobile brake systems have a "master cylinder" and a "slave cylinder"). Post your response to the WebBoard discussion forum by 09/05.
