  • Assign Essay 1 (rough draft due 1/28, peer responses due 1/31, revised draft with postscript due 2/05): an observation essay. You will need to have your topic approved by me. Please review the chapter in Reid on writing an observation essay. Also, please note that observation means focusing on sensory details, noticing how an object changes over time, and noting what is missing from what can be observed. Last, please note the differences between writing a memory essay and an observation essay. You are not writing a memory essay.

Homework--1/23-1/29
  • For 23 Jan 2001
During the second orientation session, we will complete the following exercises:
    1. First, post your responses to Scudder and Dillard (not Mowat) to Nicenet. You should use the [Turn in on-line] link next to the topic that reads "Response to Scudder and Dillard." Each response is worth 2 pts.
    2. Second, using Nicenet, post a response to the discussion prompt titled "Conference on Scudder, Dillard, and Mowat." This conference response is worth 2 pts.
  • For 25 Jan 2001
Consider and choose a subject for Essay 1. You should choose an object or place that you can observe closely and describe in detail in 2-3 pages. E-mail topic choice(s) for observation essay to me by 9 a.m., Thursday, 1/25. (The topic will need my approval.)

Remember, this is not a memory essay. You should consider something that is significant to you, that will provide you with sensory detail, and that changes over time. If you choose a place, keep in mind that you need to provide lots of close details. So a large area, such as an entire city or vacation spot, usually contains too many details to be treated adequately in 3-4 pages.

  • For 28 Jan 2001
Rough draft of Essay 1 (2 pts.): Write a 2-3 page draft of your observation essay. At the end of the draft, include the writer’s information (numbers 1-3) from the “Peer Response” protocol on p. 86 of Reid’s book.

Post draft of Essay 1, including writer’s information (p. 86), to Nicenet by 1/28. (Use the [Turn in on-line] link under the assignment for 1/28.)You will be notified of your two peer reading partners on Monday, 1/29.

  • For 31 Jan 2001
Copy your partners’ rough drafts from Nicenet and paste them into a word processor. Save each essay as a separate file.
  • Complete a peer response for each of your two partners’ essays (2 pts. per response):

    • Use a word processor to compose your peer responses.
    • Place the title of the essay and the name of the writer (not your own name) at the top of each response.
    • Save each of the essays as a separate file.
    • Use the reader’s responses (numbers 1-4) from Reid’s “Peer Response” protocol (p. 86).
    • When your responses are finished, copy each response separately from the word processor and paste it into a Nicenet personal message.
    • You should e-mail a copy of each peer response to the writer and to your instructor by 1/31.
Looking Ahead
Further instructions for submitting your final drafts will be in the “Week Three” plan, which will be posted on 1/29.

Be sure to save all your writing, including the essay draft and peer responses, to a floppy disk and/or the hard disk of your computer.
