Place-name geography (memorizing the names of places and features on a map) is important if we are to understand each other when discussing geographic issues. It is analogous to being able to read before you discuss English literature. These instructions will help you learn the required place-names and do well on the map quizzes.

There are two general ways that instructors will test your place-name ability: (1) a location on a map will be labeled and you must give its name, and (2) a place-name will be given and you must show its location on a map. Both of these approaches can be used with this map quiz tutorial.

(1) A location on a map will be labeled and you must give its name

With the on-line tutorial you simply position the curser over the country, or the letter labeling the physical feature, and click the left mouse button. The name of the country or feature that you selected will appear in the yellow answer frame at the bottom left corner of your screen.

(2) A place-name will be given and you must show its location on a map

The on-line tutorial gives you a list of the countries or physical features in the upper left frame. Find the location of each country or feature listed, click on the location you selected on the map, and check the yellow answer frame in the lower left corner of the screen to see if you are correct.

Before taking the map quiz you should also print out several outline maps and draw in the physical features and/or regions.

Be sure you are able to locate all countries and features BOTH WAYS.

In order to see more of the maps and the answer frame you may want to go to the OPTIONS menu on Netscape and click on "Show Toolbar", "Show Locations", and "Show Directory Buttons". If you use Microsoft's Internet Explorer click on the "fullscreen" button or go to the VIEW menu and click on "Toolbar", "Status Bar", and "Address Bar".
