Keep these in mind as you read and study each chapter:
General:
1. For the ______________________ realm:
- Clearly and precisely locate the realm on a blank outline map.
- Describe the physical, cultural, economic, and historical characteristics that define the realm
- Contrast these characteristics with those of the neighboring realms. (i.e. why are the realm's boundaries drawn where they are?)
- Do the realm's boundaries pass through areas of sparse population and/or are there physical barriers along the realm's boundaries? Discuss.
2. If the population growth rate is 2%, estimate the number of years it would take the population to double and to quadruple.
3. Define "geography". Which two questions do geographers try to answer. Contrast the study of geography with the study of history.
4. You must understand map scale. Know the difference between large scale and small scale. See the APPENDIX of your textbook.
5. The two realms that we studied in this unit have been, and still are, an area of many cultural conflicts. Why?
- List some of the recent and ongoing conflicts.
- Who is or was fighting whom.
- What are some of the divisive cultural forces causing the conflicts.
6. For the following vocabulary word DEFINE and GIVE AN EXAMPLE from the realms studied in this unit.
Sub-Saharan Africa:
1. In what ways is the physical geography of the African continent UNIQUE? Why does Africa have this unique physical geography?2. What was the Berlin Conference of 1884?
3. Summarize the colonial policies in Sub-Saharan Africa of the British, French, Portuguese, and the Belgians.
4. European colonization has had a lasting impact on the four realms studied in this unit (Sub-Saharan Africa, North African and Southwest Asia). Discuss several of the effects of colonization that can still be seen today. Be sure to mention WHAT the effect is and WHERE it can be seen today. [i.e. what is the colonial LEGACY?]
5. Discuss the level of development of the Sub-Saharan Africa Realm citing some data.
6. What are the barriers to economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa?
7. How can the more developed countries help in the economic development of Sub-Saharan Africa? What are they doing wrong?
North Africa and Southwest Asia
1. The name "North Africa and Southwest Asia" is rather cumbersome. Why is it still a better name for the realm than the following. Be sure to point out the criticisms of each.

2. Where are the three main area of oil reserves in North Africa and Southwest Asia? (Be able to locate on a map - See map below)
3. List some of the effects that oil production has had on the realm.
4. Briefly discuss the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Where are they fighting? Who is fighting whom? Why are they fighting?
