Modified Koppen Classification System

Our textbook uses the Koppen classification of world climates. We will be looking at climate maps of each realm so you should be familiar with the 6 Koppen categories of climates. Please study the following links so that you have a general idea of (1) the type of climate of each Koppen region (A, B, C, etc.) and (2) WHERE each of these climatic regions occur.

Summary

• A - humid tropical climates; equatorial location MAP
• B - dry, desert and semi-desert climates; western US, western and southern South America, Northern and southern Africa, southwest Asia, central Asia, Australia MAP
• C - humid, temperate climates; southwestern US, southwestern South America, Europe, southeastern China, northern and central India, South Korea, southern Japan, southeastern and southwestern Australia MAP
• D - humid, cold climates; northern North America including Midwestern US and New England, northern Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, northern Asia. There is no D climate land in the Southern hemisphere. MAP
• E - polar climates (P)
• H - highland, mountain, climates
