Solheim PHI 102 068: This new course is designed to introduce you to the study of the formal structures of arguments. We will do some Aristotelian logic (categorical propositions, the Square of Opposition) and the basics of modern formal logic (propositional logic and natural deduction). You will learn to recognize arguments, and to identify and evaluate their structures. You will learn to translate English into logical symbols. You will learn how to do proofs. We will do plenty of in-class demonstration and practice.
