My special interests in the classroom include environmental/nature writing (Dillard, Muir, Thoreau, Carson, Williams, Quammen, Leopold, etc.), creative writing, contemporary American poetry (in particular, Black Mountain poetry, language poetry, performance poetry, and deep imagist poetry), modern American poetry (especially William Carlos Williams and Wallace Stevens), children's literature, existential literature, and Russian literature. During the Fall of 2003, in addition to teaching English 101 and 102, I have returned to teaching Literature 105-Poetry after a long break. We are now two weeks into the semester, and I feel I have come home. The course promotes discussion that encourages the marriage of intellect and emotion and that discourages a rote, question-and-answer approach to analysis. In this course we will read as well as write poetry. In addition to using an anthology, we will be reading essays on poetry written by poets including Marge Piercy, Richard Hugo, Robert Bly, Denise Levertov, Diane Wakoski, Barbara Drake, and others. Reading these essays provides insight into the creative process and inspiration toward the composition of original verse.
