Basic Aspects of Online Learning |
Students and instructors need to be honest with one another by admitting that online learning is not for everyone. The main purpose of this orientation is to help you manage your expectations for the class.
For instance, at first glance, many people think that online learning is better than learning in a traditional classroom setting because online learning is more convenient. While that is true to some extent, convenience should not be confused with speed: that is, you might find that you spend more time doing classwork than you would in a traditional classroom setting. It is convenient because you can do that work when it is easiest for you. Likewise, doing work when it is convenient does not mean that this course is self-paced or independent study. There will be many deadlines to meet; but you can work at your own pace within those deadlines. (Please note that not all assignments will be due on the day of the week on which the orientation sessions are held. That day is only a reference point for registering in this course, and for the three on-campus sessions: the first two weeks of the semester and the final exam session.) The technology that is used in an online course can also present difficulties for students. There are many pieces of equipment between you and your instructors and classmates. Any one of those pieces can break or simply be difficulty to use. Moreover, those technologies with which you aren't familiar, such as the World-Wide Web or a discussion forum, are technologies that you will have to learn for the most part on your own. The easiest way to learn to use them is by using them. I, your instructor, and your classmates can often help quite a bit when you're having trouble doing something. So, don't hesitate to ask. In sum, I take it as a rule of thumb that at least five times during the semester the online environment will make it more difficult for you to do something than if you were meeting regularly in a classroom. So, expect some difficulty now and then, and be prepared with a back-up plan. |
